Tales From a Darkened Theater is an original play, and homage to Rod Serling – who gave us many great stories in popular television shows such as The Twilight Zone, and Night Gallery. It has four short stories (one act plays) surrounded by a framing story that introduces each and ties them all together.
The Twilight Zone was a well-known and successful television series in the 1950’s. Each episode was a standalone story in which characters found themselves dealing with disturbing or unusual events, and typically ending with a surprise twist or moral. The show was often a mixture of science-fiction, suspense, fantasy and psychological horror. Today the phrase “twilight zone” is used to describe surreal experiences.
The stories in our production will have the same mixture of suspense and mystery. One story starts with suspense and ends with a science fiction twist. One has a supernatural fantasy atmosphere. One is gothic horror. And one is more of a psychological horror theme – similar to Alfred Hitchcock. And the framing story is a mystery that will hopefully keep everyone guessing until the very end.
Each story is set in a different time period, and the costumes and make-up will reflect that. Like all our productions, in addition to live performances, this will heavily incorporate multi-media: video, projections, original art, creative lighting, sound effects, music, and special effects. There will be acting in the aisles and in front of the stage, and we will be entertaining the viewers from the time they arrive.
